![]() ![]() The "new physics" of Zukav's 1979 book comprises quantum theory, particle physics, and relativity. Some physicists even believe that, but the Wu Li Masters know that they are only dancing with it. Most people believe that physicists are explaining the world. This book deals not with knowledge, which is always past tense anyway, but with imagination, which is physics come alive, which is Wu Li. ![]() The Wu Li Master always begins at the center, the heart of the matter. The Wu Li Master does not teach, but the student learns. The Wu Li Master dances with his student. At an Esalen Institute meeting in 1976, tai chi master Al Huang said that the Chinese word for physics is Wu Li, "patterns of organic energy." Journalist Gary Zukav and the others present developed the idea of physics as the dance of the Wu Li Masters-the teachers of physical essence. ![]()

Despite having a far less serious intent than his earlier historical writings, Mont Saint Michel and Chartres has garnered high praise: for example, Maurice le Briton said, " Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres is undoubtedly Adams's greatest work though not apparently related to his earlier writings, this inspired work of poetry is the crowning achievement of his severe and somber historical oeuvre." A few years after Adams published Mont Saint Michel and Chartres, he published his most famous work, the Education of Henry Adams in 1907. It was published privately in 1904, originally intended simply for his nieces in 1913, it was made more widely available when published with the support of the American Institute of Architects. ![]() Whereas the latter is a serious academic work of history, Mont Saint Michel and Chartres is far more whimsical, a playful meditative reflection on medieval culture. Adams wrote it well after his historical masterpiece, The History of the United States of America (1801–1817). However, I would still like to see a new adaptation of it, if only to see if it’s possible to make the reveal as enjoyable as it is in the book. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a great mystery novel that probably works best as just a novel. Instead, let the story basically remain intact. You can tell a great story without action and I hope that if The Murder of Roger Ackroyd gets adapted again soon, the director and screenwriters don’t make major changes just to have a lot more action in the story. The book works because of the characters and how it leads the readers to the right answers constantly but makes them doubt themselves. Therefore, it may not seem like the most exciting book to adapt, but to think that would be a mistake. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd has little to no action in it. Mainly to see how faithful they are to the original stories. There are plenty more new Agatha Christie adaptations coming, which will be interesting to watch. (Image credit: ITV) It Doesn’t Have A Lot Of Action But It Has A Lot Of Intrigue ![]() ![]() ![]() The first part of the book takes place at MIT, during the 1958-59 school year. It was a great time to look back because 1985 was just a little past the 25th anniversary of the first serious hackers. At that time, Windows had not yet been released and Apple was still king of the home computer front. In a sense, Levy was in the right place at the right time, although he could hardly have known it. The changes that computers have wrought in the world since 1985 are nothing short of profound. Strangely enough, even as broad a claim as that is an understatement. As Levy notes in his Afterword (written in 2010): “…I did shoot high, making the case that the brilliant programmers who discovered worlds in the computer were the key players in a sweeping digital transformation.” It is an honor that very few books of this type ever receive. It must be gratifying to author Steve Levy to see his classic Hackers: Heroes Of The Computer Revolution celebrated with a 25th anniversary edition. ![]() ![]() ![]() As he plays with it, he realizes it has a mind and will of its own.
